A growing number of American families are blended families: They include children from past relationships who are not related by blood to the person's current partner.
Many blended families are loving, happy, and fulfilling – just like any other family! But when you have a larger family unit with complex relationships, keeping everyone content takes a little extra care. This is especially true during major life changes, such as buying a new home.
As you'd expect, making sure everyone has enough space is crucial. But there are a few more issues you'll also want to be aware of. These will help you create a harmonious balance that makes your house a home for everybody.
Remember these steps:
- Stay in the Community If You Can
Moving can be a bigger emotional stretch for kids than it is for adults. Staying within your own community allows them to maintain their connection to their current school, friends, and the neighborhoods they love. If you will be moving a greater distance, be sure kids have time to spend in their favorite places and "say goodbye" for emotional closure.
