Long Island Home Buying Blended Family
Home Buying and the Blended Family

Our REALTORS® love having the opportunity to help blended families find the perfect home!

A growing number of American families are blended families: They include children from past relationships who are not related by blood to the person's current partner.

Many blended families are loving, happy, and fulfilling – just like any other family! But when you have a larger family unit with complex relationships, keeping everyone content takes a little extra care. This is especially true during major life changes, such as buying a new home.

As you'd expect, making sure everyone has enough space is crucial. But there are a few more issues you'll also want to be aware of. These will help you create a harmonious balance that makes your house a home for everybody.

Remember these steps:

  1. Stay in the Community If You Can
Moving can be a bigger emotional stretch for kids than it is for adults. Staying within your own community allows them to maintain their connection to their current school, friends, and the neighborhoods they love. If you will be moving a greater distance, be sure kids have time to spend in their favorite places and "say goodbye" for emotional closure.
  2. Have a Space for Every Child ...
The ideal situation is for every kid to have a separate bedroom – of course, that's not always possible! No matter what, each child should have their own bed, a defined part of the closet, and some dresser drawers. Kids who only spend part of the time with you should also have their own defined space. This helps them feel included and wanted even when they are away.
  3. ... and Every Adult
Adults need space, too! However, you can be more creative about what that space entails and where you find it. For example, you might want an office space or a workshop. Whatever it is, it should express your own personality and interests. And, yes, parents: It's okay if this space is completely off-limits to the kids. The right boundaries can be healthy for everyone.
  4. Have a Play Area Everyone Can Use
When kids move, they'll usually need to have time to meet more friends and get involved in school groups or other activities. To make them comfortable – and create a safe, welcoming environment for new friends – a dedicated play area can be your best bet. It's easier to keep this space tidy, and rowdy play won't disturb anyone in the home.
  5. Include Kids in the Whole Process
Adults have to make the final calls, but kids can feel valued in the process. Early on, ask kids what they would like to have in their home. Each person in the family should volunteer a list of three or four things. This lets you see if there are shared priorities to focus on. Once move-in is complete, letting kids help decorate transforms a bare new room into their own space.

While not every house is perfect for a blended family, finding a wonderful new home is easier if you start the process with your needs firmly in mind. The best way to find a property that will truly satisfy everyone is to talk to a local real estate expert who understands your goals.

Your real estate agent can help you simplify the process by directing your attention to homes that are the best fit for you. This accelerates the buying process – and also makes it more likely you'll get an agreeable bargain on the property you bid on.
