January is Get Organized Month. What better way to start the new year than by cleaning up the clutter in your home? Especially if you're moving, it's the perfect opportunity to find space for your things where they can be easily accessed when you need them. Our REALTORS® can help you find the ideal house to meet your needs. As for keeping it organized, here are a few tips.
- Decluttering
If you've accumulated a lot of stuff over the years, decluttering can seem daunting. It helps to split it up into smaller tasks. You can go room by room or divide things up by clutter type. Start with papers and documents, then move on to books, gadgets and electronics, home decor, etc.
- Saying Goodbye
As a general rule, things you haven't used in the past year can be thrown out or donated unless they're something important like tax records or hold sentimental value. If you're unsure if you should get rid of something, consider two factors: How much space does it take up, and what would it take to replace it if you need it again? If it's easy to store, keep it. If it's easy to replace, get rid of it.
- Display Options
When you move, some of your things can stay in boxes for months, even years. Less important sentimental items get stuck in the basement or garage and forgotten. To prevent this, it helps to create deliberate space for them in your new home. Get a bookshelf for displaying things like knickknacks, family heirlooms, collections, or souvenirs. Some things like awards certificates or family photos can also be hung on the wall. This way, rather than cluttering your home or being stored out of sight, these meaningful items become part of your decor—and thus part of your new home's personality.
- Racks, Hooks, and Bins.
For things you use but not regularly, it's important to put them somewhere out of the way where you can still access them easily. For seasonal items like quilts and blankets that you break out in winter, get clear, plastic storage bins that fit under your bed and keep them there during the warmer months. For jewelry, get a rack to hang necklaces, earrings, bracelets, rings, and other items so you can see them and get at them when needed, rather than letting them get buried and tangled in a closed box. Finally, if you have an abundance of pots and pans and not enough cabinet space in the kitchen, mount hooks to hang them on the wall. You can also mount hooks in the hallway and hang coats to free up extra space in your closet.
- Labels and Inventory
For boxes you intend to store long-term, in your attic, basement, or garage, label each box clearly on all sides so you know what's in them. It also helps to take inventory of what's in each box, type it up, and make two copies. Tape one copy to the side of the box and keep the other in a safe place for easy access. That way, if you're looking for something, you can check the inventory and see which box it's in at a glance, rather than rummaging through box after box.
