Walkable Long Island Main Streets - Coach Realtors

When searching for a house among Suffolk County homes for sale, "walkability" is often an important factor. Whether you want to live in the suburbs and have close access to walkable areas or you prefer to reside right in the middle of the action, there are plenty of excellent options in the Long Island area.

Our REALTORS® love showing homes in these vibrant cities since there are so many exciting things to do. Here are a few of our favorite nearby towns with walkable main streets.

  • Garden City
If you're looking at and walkability is important to you, then you'll definitely want to check out Garden City. When visiting, plan to skip the drive and take the Long Island Railroad (LIRR) instead. The bustling downtown area is just a seven-minute walk from the station and near these Garden City homes for sale.

Once you arrive, you'll love visiting the Garden City Public Library, enjoying one of the many outdoor dining options, or just relaxing on some of the comfortable sidewalk seating. There are plenty of shopping opportunities here as well. In the summer, downtown hosts Friday Night Promenades, which are themed nights complete with live music, food, and children's activities.
  • Port Washington
When visiting Port Washington's waterfront area, the first thing you'll notice is the beautiful view. However, there's also so much more! While you're here, we suggest taking a stroll down the town dock, visiting a few of the great local shops, and grabbing a bite to eat. Conveniently located near these Port Washington homes for sale, there's often live music here in the summer and a lively farmers' market every Saturday.

  • Rockville Centre
Often referred to as an "urbanized suburb," Rockville Centre offers easy access for those who want to hop on a train and head into Manhattan as well as a very walkable area with a variety of shops and restaurants. This is a lively town with Rockville Centre homes for sale that are popular with millennials, young families, and empty-nesters. In fact, sometimes it's called a "mini-Manhattan."

  • Huntington
Huntington Village is extremely popular among local families and visitors, who swarm the area on weekends and holidays. This family-friendly area is home to many shops, restaurants, and a wide variety of activities.

From the Huntington Public Library to the Main St. Board Game Cafe and the Paramount theater, there's never a shortage of things to do here. The area is also home to many events, such as the Long Island Fall Festival, Huntington Summer Arts Festival, the annual Tulip Festival, and the Huntington Village Art Walk.

You don't have to spend much time here to see why so many people looking at Huntington homes for sale end up settling here.
  • Northport
The quaint shops, waterfront views, and many restaurants make Northport's Main Street, near these Northport homes for sale, one of the most popular in the area. It's home to both Northport Park and Cow Harbor Park, and the John W. Engeman Theater.

In the summer and fall, the city hosts a fairly large farmers' market. You also won't want to miss the annual Cow Harbor Day celebrations, including a parade, music, food, vendors, and more.
  • Port Jefferson
Main Street Port Jefferson offers a variety of activities, including plenty of shopping and dining options. There's also a 350-foot pier and promenade just a short walking distance away from the Main Street area and these Port Jefferson homes for sale. Nearby, you'll also find the Long Island Explorium, The Rinx ice skating rink, and Rocket Ship Park.
