10 Best Things About Living on Long Island
We could go on and on about all the reasons why we think Long Island is special. Needless to say, we think it's a pretty great place to live. Our real estate agents are here with some of their favorite things about living on Long Island.
- There's always a beach nearly.
It doesn't matter where on Long Island you live. There's always a great place to swim, surf, sunbathe and simply relax a few minutes away, from the popular Jones Beach State Park to the remote coastline of Fire Island National Seashore, and countless smaller and less famous beaches in between.
- The scenery is great all year round.
From the blooming wildflowers of spring to crashing surf of summer and the vivid colors of fall, Long Island is a truly beautiful place to call home.
- You're close to the city (but not too close).
It's really great to be just a quick train ride away from New York City. Long Island offers quaint small towns, rolling landscapes, and secluded beaches, but New York City is always there when you need it. - Farm-fresh produce is always readily available.
Long Island is home to countless farms and farm markets, which means you and your family can eat the fresh bounty of the season year-round.
- Long Island has a rich history.
From colonial times to the present, Long Island has a vibrant and storied past that is on display everywhere you look. Check out the Montauk Lighthouse (the first lighthouse in New York), or the St. James General Store, which has been continuously operating since 1857.
- It's becoming a wine and craft beer capital.
Long Island's North Fork is known to local wine diehards as the Napa Valley of the east, and there are a lot of great vineyards in the Hamptons too. For craft beer fans, Long Island is home to a rapidly growing craft beer scene. Blue Point Brewing Company is probably the most famous brewery on the island, but there are new, smaller microbreweries springing up all the time.
- The towns are charming, friendly and thriving.
There are dozens of small to medium-sized towns on Long Island with bustling little downtowns lined with unique, locally owned businesses. From Babylon to Huntington, and Greenport to Port Washington, Long Island's towns are endlessly welcoming. - Long Island seafood is uncredible.
Since Long Island is surrounded on three sides by water, it should come as no surprise our seafood restaurants are second to none. You'll find no shortage of seafood restaurants serving the freshest catch our local fishermen bring in. - It's super haunted.
If you aren't into ghostbusting, you can just skip this part. Long Island is home to some of the most haunted sites in America, from the King's Park Psychiatric Center to the real-life "Amityville Horror" house. If paranormal activity isn't for you, these places are pretty easy to avoid. But if you're into haunted houses, let's just say you'll like it here. - The bagels are the best around.
Ask anyone who's been to Long Island where you can get the best bagel in America. You might get a lot of different answers, but they'll all be on Long Island.
