My son is a Chaminade grad, class of 2003. I can only say positive things about the school. Yes, there is a certain rigidity to the program. The school is not for everyone. However, those boys who complete the four years are prepared for college and life with an an outstanding education as well as an outlook that many other schools do not provide. The extracurriculars and sports are incredible, and the friendships are lasting. The academic program is rigorous; all the classes are honors level, and more demanding than honors programs in other schools. If your child can succeed here, however, he will benefit.

I was a student who graduated from the class of 2006. To sum it up, Chaminade gives students a great education and challenges them. Students that do well at Chaminade could also do very well at public schools, and the students that wouldn't do well would probably be better off in public schools. However, what made me and my mother fall in love with the school is on the orientation day when Fr. James stood up in front of the auditorium and congradulated all the parents on having very bright sons. And that he would make sure they left as great husbands and fathers. I am neither one yet (probably a good thing), but I look forward to the day when I can raise my son and send him to Chaminade. It's a different type of boy that goes to Chaminade and together they leave as men.

I must admit that I was a bit skeptical about sending my son here because I had believed that there was no difference academically between Chaminade and the other public schools where I lived. However, after 4 wonderful years and an acceptance letter to Columbia University, I am convinced there is one.

My son graduated from Chaminade HS June 2004. He received a top rate education and training in character building. He worked hard for his grades and was encouraged every step of the way. He was challenged to become a man of integrity. He was accepted into six outstanding pub. and private colleges earning a full academic scholarship to one and partial scholarships to others. he cidn't miss having the 'girls' in his H.S. classes so much as he learned to respect the 'woman' he dates in college. He will graduate from the U. of Notre dame with degrees in both Mechanical Engineering and Product Design. He has worked part time for the past year while carying the academic load plus won awards for his designs through venture capital competitions. The diligence and maturity he shows he learned at Chaminade. If you want your kid to grow up/fly right send him here.

As a Chaminade alum (whose father was a CHSAA student athlete at St. Francis and whose son is now one at Arch. Stepinac), I feel that my years in Mineola prepared me both academically and athletically to compete at a top notch NESCAC (co-ed) institution, receive a top 10 school MBA and achieve a modicum of success (thru failure sometime!) in a Renaissance man career. The school prepares you for life by focussing on the four 'F''s - faith, family, friends and a foundation - both academic and athletic in my case - for Christian living...it is not a perfect institution, but it is top quality nonetheless.

As a Chaminade alumni I feel the greatest accomplishment the staff made over the years was instilling the young men there with qualities no longer taught in our society. Honor, Integrity, Determination, Faith, and Charity....these have all become words save for the lucky 4-500 men who graduate from this school every year.

I am a graduate of Chaminade. The objections made about 'only send you child here if he can handle the workload', 'Chaminade doesn't prepare your son for a coed college experience' are STRENGTHS of the school. Chaminade is about preparing tomorrow's Christian leaders not shuffling along marginal students. The all boys enrollment allows for an education unparalleled in a coed setting. Having the ability to strictly focus on academic development during your formative years is a keen advantage. All high school students will have to make some adjustments to college life and a Chaminade graduate will have to adjust to women in the college classroom. This is a very minor issue. The comment about 'not being able to be yourself' is also overblown. Chaminade does have an ideal of high character but you can follow that ideal without compromising 'yourself'.

At first it is a hard transition from a public school to private but overall it is a great school.There is social events such a co-ed dances, famous varisity basketball games at the house of noise.

Chaminade is great for many boys.My son in particular loves it it is one of the best catholic schools he has been to. It is also very active in sports my son plays lacrosse on varsity and the teachers and coaches are great. Thjis school is great for every young man.

As a graduate of Chaminade High School I can attest to the high quality education, but additionally Chaminade creates great men. They instill a sense of pride in one's work and caring for our community at large. When I look at the successes I've had I see Chaminades influence in all of them.

I'm not actually a parent, but a student who just recently graduated from Chaminade. If it means anything to the authenticity of this review I plan on sending my son, If and when I have one, to this school. To try to sum it up, Chaminade tries to emulate a military school, but replaces the military aspect with a Christian view. Its strict, but its nothing too much to fuss over about if you just do the right thing. As for coursework, yes sometimes you are left in the dark, but most of the teachers and brothers at the school are a highly motivated and helpful lot. As for the school not letting you express yourself, that is a lie. For my senior art project I did a self portrait of me as V.I. Lenin on the Communist Parade Day. Thats expression.

Excellent all round development for young men: spiritual, moral, academic, athletic. The Marianist community is amazingly dedicated to their calling to building young men with good character.

I graduated from Chaminade in the 1970's. The school was very rigorous academically and at first I did not like all the hard work I had to do to get good grades.I learned to like the hard work. I became fond of the place because the teachers were very supportive and I turned into a top student. I got into several IVY League colleges and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Yale. From there I graduated near the top of my medical school class. Chaminade taught me how to study and it paid off.

I am a graduate of Chaminade High School and, in retrospect, I believe that I received an unparalleled education. The school is strict and it will sure teach you time management skills, but the workload and very helpful faculty will push you to become a well rounded man and an exceptional student. I believe that my success beyond high school can be largely attributed to the education I received at Chaminade.

I was a 1966 grad. After Chaminade I went to Manhattan on an ROTC scholarship for Chem Engineering where I graduated with honors. Then 4 yrs in the Air Force and dental school at Tufts and then orthodontics at Tufts. I've been in the private practice of orthodontics ever since. I also teach part time at Tufts in the orthodontic department. Chaminade was the best part of my educational experience. It prepared me academically and psychologically to excel.

I am a graduate and I made the right choice by picking Chaminade. Somebody else wrote that there is no way to compare Chaminade because we don't take Regents. Allow me to explain. The NYS Board of Regents has exempted Chaminade from the Regents exams because Chaminade is too good for the exams and thus is allowed to give Comps and Trimesters which are harder and more inclusive. People who do not like Chaminade tend to think they know how Chaminade is run but they're almost always wrong. I'm not saying that Chaminade isn't strict, but I am saying that the strictness builds a better man. It is basically the last school on LI that offers a true Catholic education, as the student body is literally 100% baptized Catholic. Great choice for your child unless you are the type of parent who cannot trust that anybody else can handle your son.

I just started at Chaminade and already love it, The faculty is great and the students are friendly, although it is fairly large 1700 students all the teachers remember every student they ever taught. The food is good and it doesn't take long to become part of this tight- knit community.

I am a recent graduate of Chaminade and I only have good things to say. The all-boys thing is sometimes a pain but it is so much easier to learn that way. I noticed that a parent wrote 'should be co-ed.' I'm sorry but did you not see that in the literature you get with the acceptance letter? As a current college student I feel that I am the best prepared to handle the college work load because of Chaminade. The rules are tough but that can be a good thing. There is little tolerance for things like drugs and alcohol. You know that this school creates a strong family when, on the day before Thanksgiving tons of college-age alumni come back. You'll get to know all of the Brothers and teachers really well if you're involved. Fortes in Unitate!

Beware....Send your child here only if you are sure he can do the work...If he is not hardworking, think twice about sending him here. I know many examples of kids dropping out and kids becoming depressed in their junior and senior years....Very intimidating with all of the smart kids around, and it might make your kid jealous

I am a graduate as well as a parent of a graduate. I have read through all the comments and reviews. These comments serve to fortify my opinion. Chaminade is a great school. It is not for everyone. If you do not embrace the school, if you to not participate in any activity the school offers then you will have a negative opinion. If you get involved in some of the activities, whether sports or after school clubs you will enjoy it. There are some great public schools, no doubt. However, the appeal of chaminade is that it has something to offer to everyone. And yes, some of the brothers are snobs.

i have to agree with that comment claiming that the Chaminade community doesn't let you be "yourself." The school is certainly academically challenging, but has a stiflingly conservative political leaning. Because of this, the administration is extremely hypocritical in that it will preach Christian values (against war and violence etc.) and then pay lip service to the seemingly endless stream of military alumni who visit. As a former student, i found this deeply disturbing. In regards to the student body, be warned: any type of liberal or even center-left opinions will be met with enormous hostility. I have never, since my years at Chaminade, encountered such blatant bigotry, homophobia, and sexism from my peers. Nevertheless, it is still probably the best school on Long Island academically.

I graduated from CHS in 1972, and I have to say that the place has changed. It was extremely equalitarian while I was there, and allowed students to seek their own level academically. There was always a gulf between the "average" CHS student (who was invariably a semi-jock) and the brains, but now, it seems, the school no longer offers honors and AP courses because it seeks to shoehorn the students into the college program. My foremost problem with CHS was and remains the Court of Star Chamber approach taken by the deans of discipline, who convict students of misconduct (e.g., throwing an iceball from Our Lady's Court into a classroom) without the merest scintilla of evidence. Add to this the dilution of the academic program and there is no reason to go there except the marquee appeal of a recognizable school. I would not have sent my son to CHS, even if he were a believing Catholic (he is not; instead, he actually thinks). And I do regret having gone there. I got good academic preparation, but in spite of, not because of, the faculty.

I'm a graduate of the Class of 2010, and I personally believed that in certain aspects, the education was lacking. That being said, there are some great teachers here, but they are constricted in the boundaries of the schools antiquated curriculum. This is particularly true in the English and Foreign Language departments. The Spanish program seeks to focus on basic grammar, especially in Senior year, whereas I there was no serious focus on Spanish literature, where the grammar can be applied and reinforced. This is the true sin of the school, especially as bilingualism is becoming more and more necessary for job applicants. The English department also lacks in literature. To Kill a Mockingbird is middle-school level, yet is a freshman year book. Additionally, various works of Shakespeare are assigned, but I feel as though I didn't actually get a strong interpretation of it unless it was explained by the instructor. Lectures were cursory and left no room for discussion. Socially, I will say that while there is a certain slant associated with the school, there is a basic level of respect that people have for one another. Though thats partly because of the Draconian discipline.

Did not prepare me in the slightest for what I intend to study in college, mainly because of their overly-strict, structured curriculum. Their philosophy of having no APs really creates a horror once you go off to college...but not to worry...if you follow the college placement office's advice, a Chaminade graduate will do fine at a religious school like Villanova, or perhaps a state school. Had I listened to their advice, I would not be at an ivy-league university now. This is all part of their plan...everyone must think the same way and act the same, and naturally the "challenging academic programs" will provide adequate preparation for college. Think again. Their science program is anything but challenging. In my introductory science college course, we covered everything I learned at chaminade in about 3 weeks, while students who took the AP class at their public schools used the same textbook. Chaminade DID help me mature and develop a close relationship with teachers, although the solely republican atmosphere is NOT what college is like. Summary: A Chaminade diploma looks great. Employers LOVE Chaminade, but intend to work a lot harder in college than your peers at college.

Parents are led to believe this is an 'elite' school but rather the school lives under its own standards which can not be compared to other Catholic schools on Long Island since the students do not take NY State Regents or AP select courses to put us on an even playing field. Courses are limitted as is socialization! I have seen graduates change colleges after first year because Chaminade does not prepare students for a co-ed, non Catholic world. Too many egos here. They offer a great education by books but no real life skills!

Chaminade offers the routine subjects; there is no room for a student to broaden himself based on his individual strengths. Chaminade does offer a good religious education, but it doesn't provide boys with opportunities that some of the other Catholic High Schools offer (such as, St. Anthony's HS and Holy Trinity HS). Why doesn't Chaminade challenge the boys to be in an Honors Program, and why doesn't Chaminade offer AP courses?

I was expecting more, but maybe its my son's fault. Some boys do very good and others do just good/average, but that is true in every school. A public school can bring out the most in a kid for a subject that he excells in, instead of everyone following the same courses.But he'll stay at Chaminade. The brothers are very nice. And the religioous education is great.

I went to Chaminade, for one year. My mother sent me there for the snob appeal. If you were one of them, you'd do fine. Students are less than friendly, to say the least. I transferred to St Francis Prep, a much more well rounded education, great students, and faculty, and LOVED IT!

This school is great, academically, granted, but it does not do much for the development of our children. Let me start on the positive side, this school has a strenous course load and you need to truly develop study habits in order to do well, which helps our children in later education. However, this school is black or white. Either they love you or they hate you. You cannot step out of line at all, or you cannot 'be yourself' because they try to compare everyone to the Christian ideal that they have set.

I love Chaminade High School. My son goes there and it has been the best 3 years of his life so far! Chaminade is a hard school, but it hepls you very much. If you decide to go here you wont regret it.My son takes the late bus home almost everyday, because of clubs,sports,working out,practices,extra help,and much more.I love to see him involved,and doing good in his studies!Chaminade has definatly helped him with both,and the studie and knowing of our religon.This school has done so much!

I am an alumni of Chaminade and have made education my livelihood. Here is what I learned at Chaminade: 1) No excuses, find a path to success; 2) Ask for help if you need it. Offer it to others if they need it. 3) Think of the well being of others before you consider your own well being; 4) Be a renaissance man, and 5) To be or not to be, that it the question. Whether it is nobler in the mind to suffer The all boys environment only helped me. My parents, family, summer jobs, etc. taught me how to behave around girls. One gripe; I wish they offered Italian.

This is a new time with new global challenges for educators and students. Ethics, integrity and Christian compassion along with a strong education suited for the challenges, is what is needed for success. Chaminade has great marketing, however their approach to education is dated and many students graduate unprepared to think on 'their feet' because they have been so 'controlled' for four years. Chaminade is similiar in discipline to a military academy, so if your child has discipline issues this may be a good choice for you, however if you have a well adjusted bright child you may consider and environment that supports growth rather than a rigid environment. Also, this Catholic school does not accept any child with 'accomadations' that would require any special help. This statement is found in the CHSEE entrace examine booklet.

Chaminade offers the subjects necessary for success - not routine ones like Trinity or even St. Anthony's. It offers student more opportunities to broaden their individual strenghts than any other school by its activities and clubs, more than any othe school offers. The activities are all nationally ranked. All the classes are an honors program that even horor roll students from other schools cannot even succeed. Chaminade can claim fortune 500 leaders, media leaders, political leaders, financial leaders, sprots leaders and religious leaders.

Great school; it's rigorous enough, but everyone from 75% and up have same work. It would have been more challenging if they had honors courses for those who qualify, and a few AP courses would have been a great opportunity too. But it's still a great school.
